Teaching Bio:

Karen Hopkins has over 9 years experience teaching violin, viola and piano students, from ages 3 through 70. Although she is primarily a violist, most of her teaching experience has been on violin and piano. She started out on piano with the Suzuki method, later picking up viola with teachers of different styles and methods. Because of this varied experience, she is able to teach her students using a variety of methods, including the Bastien and Alfred books for piano and the All for Strings books for violin and viola, and likes to cater the teaching style to the individual student. She is very patient with her students and values thorough explanations and demonstrations to the student. As a professional musician, she values not only hard work in her students, but also an enjoyment for playing music.

Originally from the Washington, D.C. area, Karen has performed at Constitution Hall, The Kennedy Center, Jordan Hall, Symphony Hall, Cutler Majestic Theatre, and many other venues in California, Indiana, Virginia, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Ontario, Canada. As a violist, she has been coached by the Borromeo and Penderecki String Quartets, and as an orchestral musician she has performed under distinguished conductors such as Gustavo Dudamel, Ludovic Morlot, John Page, and many others. She has significant chamber music, solo, and orchestral experience, and she is always eager to pass her knowledge on to her students.
